Connecting TEN-TEC QSK amps to TEN-TEC transceivers & most other transceivers

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CONNECTING THE CENTURION,ALL TITANS, CENTAR AND HERCULES II TO A TEN-TEC TRANSCEIVER WITH A KEYING LOOP (TX OUT/TX EN JACKS ON THE REAR PANEL)

Please refer to FIGURE 1-2 ON PAGE 1-6 in the Centurion Owner’s Manual.

Locate the QSK cable that is included in the packing kit. (Double RCA cable with a red and black connector on each end). 46160

 

Plug one end of the RED cable into the TX OUT jack on the rear panel of the transceiver, plug the other end of the RED cable into the KEY IN jack on the rear panel of the Centurion.

Plug one end of the BLACK cable into the TX EN jack on the rear panel of the transceiver, plug the other end into the KEY OUT jack on the rear of the Centurion.

 

Activate the keying loop in the transceiver. The keying loop is activated in the Menu in the Orion, Orion II, Omni VII and Jupiter. Note: the Orion and Orion II have two keying loops. Keying loop 1 only operates with ANTENNA 1, keying loop 2 only operates with ANTENNA 2. The keying loop in Omni V, Omni VI, Paragon and Paragon II is activated by removing the JUMPER from the TX EN/TX OUT JACKS on the rear panel of the transceiver. NOTE: If the keying cable is removed from the KEY IN/KEY OUT JACKS on the Centurion or the TX EN/TX OUT JACKS on the transceiver the transceiver will not transmit until the keying loop is turned off in the menu or the jumper is replaced.

 

Place the QSK/PTT switch on the front panel of the Centurion in the QSK position. The switch will remain in the QSK position for all modes of operation, CW, SSB and DIGITAL.

 

 INSTRUCTIONS FOR CONNECTING THE CENTURION TO A NON TEN-TEC TRANSCEIVER

 QSK with Yaesu Transceivers:

The Yaesu QSK loop is on the band data jack. Pin 2 on the band data jack is TX OUT and goes to KEY IN on the Ten-Tec amplifier. Pin 8 is TX EN and goes to KEY OUT on the Ten-Tec amplifier. Pin 3 is ground. The QSK/PTT switch on front panel of the Centurion MUST be in QSK for all modes of operation.

 

CW QSK with early Ten-Tec transceivers with no keying loop or Kenwood, or Icom transceivers: Refer to Figure 1-3 on page 1-6 in the Centurion Manual.

Early Ten-Tec transceivers, Kenwood and Icom transceivers do not have a keying loop. Connect the CW key or keyer into the KEY IN jack on the rear panel of the Centurion. Connect a cable from KEY OUT on the rear panel of the Centurion to the KEY jack on the transceiver. The QSK/PTT switch on the front panel of the Centurion MUST be switched to QSK.

Non QSK CW, SSB and Digital modes with early Ten-Tec transceivers, Kenwood, Icom, Yaesu, Collins Drake, Heathkit or other transceivers or transmitters.

Refer to the transceivers owner’s manual and locate the amplifier control relay jack (closure to ground on transmit). Connect a cable from the amplifier control relay jack on the rear of the transceiver to the PTT JACK on the rear of the Centurion. The front panel QSK/PTT switch on the Centurion must be switched to PTT for all modes of operation.
