Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) is a consortium of radio end electronics manufactures from around the world that banded together in the late 1990s to create a universal digital system for the AM broadcasting bands below 30 MHz—shortwave, medium wave and longwave. The system that was created also bears the name of the group; Digital Radio Mondiale.DRM is the world’s only non-proprietary, digital system for shortwave, medium wave, and long wave with the ability to use existing frequencies and bandwidth across the globe. The result is FM quality sound via shortwave.

The TEN-TEC RX-340 is capable of receiving DRM digital broadcasts with extra software (not supplied) and appropriate sound card. The RX-340 has a I-F output jack on the back panel that allows received signals to be streamed fromat he I-F directly to your computer’s sound card for Digital Radio Mondiale decoding. This special decoding software is only available (for 60 Euros, about $60.00) through the DRM consortium via the DRM Software Radio web site located atwww.drmrd.org. It is not available through Ten-Tec. There is a list of specific computer operating system and sound card requirements to be able to successfully decode DRM signals. The list of specifications is on the DRM software purchase page located at www.drmrx.org/purchases.php. Note that the last specification listed is suitable front end with 12 kHz output. Your RX-340 has this special IF output.

No hardware modification to the radio is necessary, buy you’ll need this set of instructions to have the radio ready to provide a suitable output to your PC for decoding DRM. First, as noted above, you need the DRM software from thewww.drmrx.org website.

Select USB mode on the RX-340, and set the bandwidth control to 16 kHz. Turn the PBT control to +2 kHz. Offset the receiver -12 kHz from the nominal carrier frequency. Example: there are currently test broadcasts of DRM on 9660 kHz. After setting the above, tine the receiver -12 kHz to 9648 kHz.

Load the DRM software, connect a line level audio output on the RX-340 to the sounds card on your PC, and you’re ready to decode the transmissions.
